Seminar: B.F. Skinner's Verbal Behavior

(Winter 2003)

Seminar Schedule:

SAFMEDS

SAFMEDS stands for "Say All Fast a Minute Every Day Shuffled." SAFMEDS are basically flashcards. The SAFMEDS list (click here to download the list) tells you what to print on the front and back of each card. The front of each flashcard will contain textual information intended to occasion a given response. You will read the textual prompt aloud and then say the intended response from the back of the card (without looking first). For example, the front of the card might say, "Verbal response occasioned by a feature of the environment and maintained by generalized reinforcement" and you should say, "A tact." The SAFMEDS for our Verbal Behavior (VB) seminar are based largely on those provided by Julie Vargas in the graduate course she teaches on the topic at West Virginia University.

To become facile at applying a verbal behavior analysis to language, I strongly recommend you practice the VB SAFMEDS daily. You should aim for a rate of correct responses of about 60 movements per minute with at least a X10 accuracy ratio across at least a 30-second timing. For people taking the seminar for 3 credits, turning in a Daily per Minute Chart showing their SAFMEDS practice should meet the applied project requirement.

Click here to download a printable version of a Daily per Minute Standard Celeration Chart. Alternately, you may ask Michael and he will provide you with a chart for your own use.

If you need assistance charting on the SCC, Michael will be available after our meeting on January 15th to help.
