Welcome to the home page for the Area of Special Education's Seminar on B.F. Skinner's book Verbal Behavior. In this seminar, we will read and discuss Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior from theoretical and experimental perspectives. This seminar is appropriate for anyone with a basic understanding of behaviorism and reinforcement theory and who also wishes to explore the behavior analysis of language. Please note that this seminar will not heavily emphasize the use of a verbal behavior analysis in applied settings. Please note the room change for our seminar!! We will meet in 307 Ballmer Hall for all subsequent sessions UPDATE: A taxonomy of verbal behavior has been added under the miscellaneous section of the course website Please note that to access the articles and materials, you must have the latest version of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program installed on your computer. Click here to download the latest version of Acrobat Reader. You have two options for participating in the seminar. If you would like to receive credit, and you are currently enrolled at the UW, please sign up for EDSPE 600 with Owen White. You should get a "blue form" for independent studies from the Special Education Office in Miller Hall. Complete the form and have Owen sign it. You may take the seminar for either 1 or 3 credits. If you take it for 3 credits, you will need to turn in a product related to verbal behavior. We will discuss details about this during our first meeting. If you are not currently enrolled as a UW student but you still want university credit, you should contact UW Admissions and enroll at the University as a non-matriculating student. If you are not enrolled as a UW student and do not wish to receive credit for the seminar, please e-mail Michael to confirm your participation and join us! Even if you are not enrolled at UW and do not wish to receive credit for the seminar, Michael will provide you with a certificate of completion at the end of the seminar. The certificate should satisfy the documentation requirements of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board for continuing education credit.
